Are some children unteachable

Remember Ishaan from Taare Zameen Par. During the initial part of the movie you might have definitely felt that the boy is unteachable but Aamir Khan’s entry as the Art teacher marked a drastic change in Ishaan’s life as well as in the mindset of the audience.

The term ‘unteachable’ comes as a very vague term because had this been the case, a child wouldn’t have ever learnt to speak words, make sentences and understand actions and body language. Actually there are lots of methods that are present these days that can really help students in various types of hard subjects. They can easily get Math homework help etc.

This makes it very clear that students can be everything but unteachable. Indeed there are few children who have difficulty learning but that does not mean that they are unteachable. There are several factors that affect a child’s learning abilities.

These factors may be internal like stress or external as in the family environment. A child learns while playing and his education begins at home. Parents must take responsibility for educating the child in a manner that suits him since a child stays longest with his/her parents.

Family issues and conflicts may disturb a child’s mind and affect his learning abilities. Thus parents must also keep in mind that the child stays as far away from all this as possible.

Some of the learning disabilities associated with children are as follows:

  1. Dyslexia: Let’s get to Ishaan again. The problem he faced in the movie is known as dyslexia. The child faces difficulty perceiving what is written, everything appears in a jumbled form. Then he faces difficulty processing it and producing it in oral or verbal forms. Thus there are different ways of teaching such a child. Their mind knows how to learn, the only thing to remember is that their learning process takes a different way than the normal one.

  2. Dyspraxia: This disability affects a child’s motor skills which help in movement and coordination. Thus a child with this disability may have problems walking straight and understanding the location of certain objects in front of him, eventually colliding with the things on the way. The child may also face issues holding objects and understanding using them or doing certain activities. Thus he may face problems reading, writing and even sometimes speaking clearly. The child may also face difficulty in using his different sense organs.

  3. Dyscalculia: A child facing this disability may require help in Math homeworks and Math assignments since the problem here is with understanding Math and doing it. Assignment help for certain subjects can be tough to get. Thus in such a case, in early stages a child may have problems learning how to count and this may progress into facing difficulty solving easy Math problems and even learning tables.

  4. Dysgraphia: This disability affects a child’s writing abilities. Children with this disability tend to have bad handwriting, issue putting thoughts into words and even grammatical and spelling errors.

  5. Dysphasia: Here a child may face problems understanding speech of others and also in putting out his thoughts in speech. A child with this disability may not be able to re-relate to people certain things he heard from others or may have difficulty speaking fluently and sometimes understanding directions.

  6. Visual Processing Disorder: In such cases there is lack of eye-hand coordination. A child may tend to give different shapes to numbers or alphabet or may skip lines or words while writing and reading respectively. Thus in such a case, the child has issues implementing what his eyes perceive.

  7. Auditory Processing Disorder: If you are not able to hear clearly what is said you may definitely face problems in putting it into words. That is what happens with children facing this disability. Therefore understanding of basic concepts becomes difficult for such people.

  8. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder: This disorder is particularly not related to difficulty in learning but results in lack of attention in a person due to which he is not able to stay in a position and concentrate on one thing for long.

Now such students require special care and attention so that their learning is not disrupted. Clinical treatments are one side of efforts towards their improvement, and patience from their near and dear ones is another.

No doubt other than normal methods are required to teach them but they are not unteachable.one may teach them while playing with them or using toys or any other such tool that they like.

Parents or guardians must also remember that if they concentrate on building bonds with the child, the child may feel attracted towards the person and this may affect his learning and give positive results.

Ishaan could not develop the bond with his parents that he developed with his teacher (played by Aamir Khan) because the former failed to understand him, trying to treat him as normal children while the latter understood his problems and put all his efforts to understand him and eventually make him understand things. Thus parents should remember that being rough on such students and being strict with them would not produce the desired results. Rather it would distance them from their child. Language of love and understanding favours the learning process of such children and with little more effort, in sometime they would start learning like other children bringing them to the same plane.

Thus, it proves that no children are unteachable. It is just a matter of effort and some genetic factors that they face problems being taught and are not able to learn the same way as other children.
